Question from an art student:

Hello Juan. Impressionism is an art style interesting me most of all.No detal just impression.
My question is;If i tred to paint in  split-compementory color system ,tell me please would it be correct to use other colors out of this sistem as  incydential colors?.How do  you do it?

  1. Sorry, I'm a little late in answering this! You have two questions. I'll answer the impressionist question first. Impressionism started with a realism base that expanded into a more personal statement. From that grew the modern painting era where anything goes. About color and working with complements, I would recommend studying the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Gaughin. Both used complementary colors in their works for vibrancy. One present day watercolorist that mentored me was Millard Sheets. It is OK to add incidental colors, but adding more than three colors is not advisable. Juan
